COLSC NEWS RELEASE
June 14, 2008

CHAIN O' LAKES SPORTSMAN'S CLUB
YOUTH TEAMS WIN IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

On June 14, 2008, two of the three SCTP youth shooting teams representing the Chain O' Lakes Sportsman's Club, medaled in their divisions at the Michigan State Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Championships, at the Detroit Sportsman's Congress, Utica, Michigan.

The Chain O' Lakes Sportsman's Club's Rookie SCTP Team composed of Cody Hutton, age 11, of Rapid City, Travis Scott, age 10, of Rapid City and Tanner Scott, age 8, also of Rapid City, won the silver medal in sporting clays competition in their age group.

The Junior Varsity team composed of Kyle Frimodig, age 17, of Bellaire, Alex Ott, age 13, of Bellaire, and Frank Israel, age 15, of Williamsburg, won the bronze medal in Sporting Clays competition in their age group.

The clubs other Junior Varsity team composed of Zack Tipton, age 18, of Bellaire, Billy Bohannon, age 15, of Bellaire and Zeke Vanas, age 15, of Rapid City, came in fourth in Sporting Clays competition, also in the same age group.

The Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) is sponsored country-wide by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, and is a nationwide program to encourage and train our nations youth in gun safety and competitive shooting in the shotgun sports of Sporting Clays, Trap, Skeet, and international Trap and Skeet, with the focus on developing expert marksmen, the best of the best.  Every SCTP youth has the opportunity to take his skills to the ultimate level; an invitation to train at the Olympic Sports Training Facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, and beyond that to the Olympics.

It should be noted that this is the first year of competition in SCTP for the Chain O' Lakes Sportsman's Clubs youth shooting teams, and more remarkable, the first year of competitive shooting for the youngsters themselves.  So far in the 2008 target year, our Rookie team and two Junior Varsity teams, brought home a total of two Gold, four silver and two bronze medals in registered team events; an amazing accomplishment.

Much credit goes to the dedication and hard work of team coaches Noel Hutton of Rapid City, Trina McDuffie of Bellaire and Don Brown, also of Bellaire.

Success does not occur with the simple expenditure of time, there are costs involved too for such things as ammunition and clay targets, travel expenses for food, fuel, lodging, and entry fees, etc. With the help of many gracious supporters this success has not cost the club a dime.  Anyone wishing to donate to help maintain the program may do so by check to COLSC, with SCTP on the memo line, and mail it to: COLSC, P.O. Box 765, Bellaire, MI  49615.

COLSC/SCTP Youth Shooting Program Takes More Medals!

COLSC NEWS
The Chain O' Lakes Sportsman's Club "SCTP" team competed today at the Genesee County Sportsman's Club, Flushing, Michigan.

COLSC had eight SCTP youths competing in three teams.  All three teams medaled against other teams from Wayne, Genesee and several other Michigan counties.

The results are as follows:

  • Our Rookie Squad, (5th grade and below) composed of Cody Hutton, Travis Scott and Tanner Scott took a gold medal in Sporting Clays and a silver medal in Skeet.
  • Our Junior Varsity Squad, first year of competition in the Senior Division (9th grade and above), composed of Dominic Holly, Alex Ott and Kyle Frimodig, took a silver medal in Sporting Clays.
  • Our Junior Varsity Squad, first year of competition in the Senior Division (9th grade and above), composed of Zeke Vanas and Billy Bohannan took a bronze medal in Sporting Clays.

The success of the Scholastic Clay Target program is directly attributable to everyone who donated money and ammunition:
Bellaire CC, Brian Rathke, Brian Kroll, John Thumm, Noel Hutton, Trina McDuffie, Jack Bohannan, Rob Scott, Dave Holly, Hank VanLooy, Tim Wolfe, Gary Cramer, Jerry Dunsmore, Stan Zenas,
Jeff Ott, and Bob Bergman.
...Without these donations SCTP could not have gotten off the ground.
The youths involved are planning fund raising activities in order to sustain the program but additioanl financial help will still be needed from COLSC Founders and members in order to build a foundation upon which to continue to operate and compete.

The entire SCTP team, including coach's Noel Hutton, Trina McDuffie and Don Brown, would like to thank everyone for their encouragement and financial support.

Donations may be sent directly to COLSC/SCTP Youth Shooting program, at P.O. 765, Bellaire, michigan, 49615

The next competitive meet is on May 10 at the Kent County Conservation League in Grand Rapids.

With everyone's support, our youth will continue to earn more medals, and represent the club to the fullest extent possible.

SCTP
April 8, 2008

Dear Founders and Members:

The Chain 0' Lakes Sportsman's Club has a group of very enthused kids who have trained diligently to compete in the Scholastic Clay Target Program.  They also take it upon themselves to come to the club and shoot on their own dime and own ammunition when they can afford it.

On their first shoot out of the gate (a non-registered SCTP fun shoot) at the Detroit Shooting Congress in Utica, the team won a silver medal.

They are currently in the process of putting together a Shoot-a-Thon to raise money and a raffle that the kids will be working hard to sell tickets for.  The raffle prizes will be a CZ, over and under, DLX grade, 20 ga. shotgun and a Smith & Wesson, .40 cal., semi-auto M&P pistol.  Tickets will be six for $10.00 and whoever sells the most tickets, SCTP member, Founder, Club member or anyone else, will win a Henry, .22 cal., youth model, lever action rifle in recognition of their efforts.

All the raffle prizes have been generously supplied by club member and SCTP coach Noel Hutton at a price below wholesale.

The SCTP program has progressed so far on a few generous donations from the kids, parents, founders and club members who have contributed cash, time, effort and ammunition to the tune of over $1000.00; this includes almost $500.00 from Brian Rathke and the Bellaire Conservation Club to put on the free Youth Day Shoot last November.

The SCTP program has also applied for an NRA grant which will take until August before we will know if it has been granted.

The SCTP teams first registered shoot is coming up on April 26th which will require travel downstate, entry fees, ammo and a few McDonald's burgers, not to mention fuel; it'll be down and back in one day (no housing or motel bills)......and thus I am making another appeal for enough money to sustain the program over the short haul until we can begin to get our financial feet under us.

The SCTP operating fund currently stands at $0.40 in the red.

You may donate by check to COLSC, with SCTP on the memo line, and mail it to: COLSC, P.O. Box 765, Bellaire, MI  49615.

If you have any questions please call Doug Fowler, 231-264-6905, or email dfowler376@torchlake.com or Noel Hutton, 231-331-4348, email Noel.lisa@gmail.com

Thank you.
